Indoor Dog vs. Outdoor Dogs

Indoor Dogs Vs. Outdoor Dogs

Dog owners may debate this until the end of time, but most experts agree that most dogs prefer to be in a situation where they can interact with people and other pets.

Dogs kept outdoors with litlle or no human interaction may be more likely to develop behavioral problems like excessive barking, fence running, escaping and even aggression.

Dogs kept outdoors are also more likely to have physical problems and parasitic diseases like fleas, ticks, intestinal parasites, and heartworms.

I’m doing a paper on this subject.. that is, free-ranging vs restrained dogs. I do think that dogs who are isolated for most of the day and never get to run around properly need a better life, and I am fairly certain that there’s not a human alive who can walk(or run) a border collie out of energy.

Also, indoor dogs tend to be more poorly socialized and aggressive towards other dogs. Stray dogs often have much better manners towards humans and animals than owned dogs, simply because it’s easier to survive if you’re well-mannered.

Of course, weighing that against the not getting vet care and the likelihood of being killed by cars or humans makes it a very complex issue. I do agree that no owned dog should be an “outside” dog. Dogs should be with their people!

By the way, I love your site!
